Primed for Ignition
July 2010, by Richard Thorne
In the United States especially, corporate advertising can be a killer way to break a little known artist into mainstream consciousness and even global fame – ask Feist, our own Steriogram or the born-again Phil Collins. Typically such opportunities come via well-connected publishers and mostly as a random stroke of song synching luck. But as the music industry does less and less to look after its own or create sustainable new stars, it seems the general business world may yet provide new pathways to fame and fortune. Hitherto unknown Wellington-based singer Anita Prime has made her own ‘Destiny’ and may possibly have her ruby shoes planted on one such yellow brick road as Richard Thorne discovers. ...more

MP3 Happened – Now What?
July 2010, by Matt Bentley
It wasn't the beginning of the end, just a harbinger of it. Subsequent formats such as aac, ogg later sprang up based around the same ideas, and the overall concept had already been made a reality by prior formats such as ac3 and mp2 – they just didn't do it as well as mp3 did. Discard psycho-acoustically negligible information to gain a 5-12x reduction in file size – meaning a song could comfortably and easily be ported around the internet, even in the days of dialup. ...more
State of Rock Tour Blog #3
July 2010, by Sam Browne - Black River Drive
After the long stretch of highway between Christchurch and Dunedin, it ain’t no thang to hit the road for three hours up to Whangarei. The obligatory pie stop is made at Wellsford, as is customary, and energy drinks are bought and consumed. We have but one gig this week and everyone is pumped to pour everything we’ve got into it. ...more

Over three days in early June the annual APRA Song Summit was held in Sydney, an opportunity for songwriters to network, attend workshops and hear widely respected speakers try to explain some of the mysteries of successful songwriting. Victoria Girling-Butcher attended the summit and was happy to share some of the wisdom bestowed by US-based musician, producer and song writer Ralph Murphy. ...more

State of Rock Tour Blog #1
June 2010, by Sam Browne - Black River Drive
The Black River Drive guys and myself met up with the other bands at Auckland airport at the designated time, everybody amped for the first show of the tour. With this being our first tour, we weren’t sure what to expect, aside from the obvious (put on a good show!). ...more
State Of Rock Tour Blog #2
June 2010, by Sam Browne - Black River Drive
Up at the crack of dawn (9am), we pile out onto the footpath and grab much needed coffees and breakfast at the C1 café before jumping in the vans for the long drive to Dunedin. The time passes quickly and we have few stops apart from a look around the charming little town of Oamaru. ...more
