US album sales
By Richard Thorne
Okay, so we all know that the music industry’s in a precipitous decline and that it’s become a singles-dominant market, but these recently publicised stats on the US album market (from BigChampagne) are still an eye opener:
# Albums that sold at least one copy in 2009: 98,000
# Number of albums selling less than 100 copies in 2009: 81,000
(so 17,000 albums must’ve sold more than 100 copies)
# Albums selling more than 10,000 units in 2009: 1,319
# Albums selling more than 250,000 units in 2009: 85
(and, by way of contrast looking back just a few years)
# Albums selling more than 250,000 units in 2001: 214
