8 Foot Sativa’s debut album, ‘Hate Made Me’ has gone Gold, and 8 Foot Sativa’s second Album, ‘Season For Assault’ has just being released worldwide through Intergalactic's license to Sweden-based Black Mark Records. The album is available in 37 countries, covering every country in Europe, plus the USA, Canada, Japan, and South Korea. The band are currently in Sweden recording their 3rd album at Studio Underground, one of Europe’s top studios; the album is due for NZ release on December 14. Singer Justin Niessen has left the band and his replacement is Matt Sheppard, brother of drummer Sam.
Sugarlicks Records has secured worldwide distribution for its artist releases by Brother J and One Million Dollars, and upcoming releases for Substax, Solephonic, Ghost Tones, Jah'licious, Murk108 and the Nabatean. The catalogue will be released through prestigious German-based company MDM, who also carry labels such as Giant Step (NYC). Sugarlicks was also named ‘Best label’ at Popkomm 2004 by European publisher Amandla Publishing.
Katchafire have just completed 3 sold out dates in Australia. They’re soon to play in New Caledonia, and are off to Fiji early December. The new album 'Slow-burning' is out November 29th, through Shock/EMI. In an original step, Iwi radio stations nationwide have been invited to broadcast an exclusive live-to-air Katchafire performance, with the band debuting material from their album in a live simulcast, prior to release.
King Music are releasing ‘Supa-Fresh’, a compilation which showcases both the creme of Pacific music plus up-and-coming artists, with artists such as Che Fu, Scribe, Adeaze, Nesian Mystik, King Kapisi and Soane in the lineup. Expect some international action on this one.
Robert Scott is doing a national tour starting this month to promote his new album of old Otago folk songs, with support from American artist Faun Fables.
Te Vaka have had Hawaiian dates confirmed for 2005, they will be on tour there from May 5th – 18th 2005.
Monkey Records is releasing the first two albums recorded in the Monkey studio: Peachy Keen and 'Bright Colours' by Eightfold - both engineered and produced by label founder Nigel Braddock.
Fresh from completing the Scribe "Stand Up" tour of Australia in October, Mareko and Savage are back in Australia next week on the "White Sunday" tour in support of Mareko’s album release in Australia. "White Sunday" is available in Australia through Dawn Raid/Inertia. Mareko & Savage have been confirmed for the New Zealand & Australian leg of the BDO tour.
Adeaze are releasing a special collector's edition of their album 'Always & For Real', featuring a bonus disc of Christmas songs & remixes of How Deep is Your Love & Getting Stronger. And in time for the party season, Brotha D is opening a nightclub, Chocolate City, in Papatoetoe.
Congratulations to the IMNZ-related artists and labels who successfully applied for Creative New Zealand assistance in the most recent funding round. Auckland band The Coolies will now be able to head off on a United States tour and a in the process do some recording. Chris Chetland of KOG transmissions will be able to work with and learn from international producers. Rattle Records Ltd received funding toward an album of award-winning Olympic composer John Psathas' concertos, and Te Vaka management and Opetaita Foa'i were awarded a contribution toward a new Te Vaka album.
