The Town Hall organ is back!

12th March 2010
Source: YahooNews

A $3.5 million restoration of Auckland City's Town Hall organ will be recognised with a free public concert on March 21. The restoration of the 40 tonne organ by world-renowned organ specialists Orgelbau Klais in Germany took two years and 27,000 hours of work. The rebuilt organ will be opened to the public for the first time at the civic event and will feature a symphony composed and played by Auckland city organist Dr John Wells. The organ was given to the city by a former mayor, Sir Henry Brett, when the Auckland Town Hall opened in 1911. The organ was altered in the 1970s but that led to a lacklustre sound and the decision was made to restore it. The cost of the restoration was made by the city council which paid $3 million, and the Auckland Town Hall Organ Trust which raised the rest. The organ has more than 5300 pipes with the largest nearly 10m long and weighing 120kg.

Tickets to the organ homecoming ceremony are available from the Aotea Centre box office or phone 09 357 3355.
