The New Zealand School of Music Big Band has been awarded the Tui for Best Jazz Album of 2009. Under the musical direction of veteran big band leader Rodger Fox, the Wellingtonian group beat out two trios, Alan Broadbent, Frank Gibson and Putter Smith with ‘Together Again’ and Ron Samson, Dixon Nacey and Kevin Haines with ‘Open To Suggestions’ - to take home the award. ‘Run For Cover’ was recorded in August 2009 with Grammy nominee Talley Sherwood at the engineering helm. As well as a bunch of our best young jazz musicians, the album features three international jazz recording artists - trumpeter Clay Jenkins, saxophonist Bob Sheppard and pianist Bill Cunliffe.
The New Zealand School of Music Big Band will be recognised at the NZ Music Awards - October 7 2010.
