Katie Thompson wins RaboIdol

4th June 2009

Singer/songwriter Katie Thompson has been announced as the winner of RaboIdol. The competition, run by online savings and investment company RaboPlus and online album funding site SellaBand, gave two NZ artists; Thompson and Kane Sole, the chance to compete for an investment of $10,000. Throughout NZ Music Month the public were called on to vote for their favourite artist via the RaboPlus website.

With the investment from RaboPlus, Thompson’s album fund has reached US$20,000. If she reaches US$50,000, people who invested will receive a limited edition of Katie’s recorded album, and 50 per cent of net revenue generated is split 50/50 with the artist and her investors for five years.

If Katie reaches US$50,000 she would be the second Kiwi artist to benefit from the SellaBand community and record an album. In 2007 Christchurch rapper Maitreya - Jamie Greenslade - reached US$50,000 with Sellaband and recorded and produced his album 'Close To Home' in London and New York.

How SellaBand works
• On SellaBand, artists try to raise US$50,000 to record an album, which is made up of 5,000 ‘parts’ of US$10
• Anyone around the world can become a ‘believer’ by investing in an artist by buying ‘parts’
• For their investment, ‘believers’ receive a limited edition of the artist’s album when it has been recorded
• 50 per cent of all net revenue generated from the recorded music is split 50/50 with the artist and his or her believers, for five years
