APRA Silver Scroll Awards 2008 winners

11th September 2008
APRA Silver Scroll Awards 2008 winners

The 43rd outing of the APRA Silver Scroll Awards held in Auckland on September 10 saw Opshop deservedly double dipping. Jason Kerrison, Bobby Kennedy, Matt Treacy and Clinton Harris won the Most Performed Work in NZ award as well as the music industry's most prestigious songwriting prize, the Silver Scroll itself, both awarded for their song One Day.

The Silver Scroll is peer voted, decided by NZıs songwriters and composers who are APRA members. The melancholy One Day from Opshop's double-platinum album 'Second Hand Planet' gained huge additional exposure as the NZ Post tele advert campaign anthem.

³Opshop richly deserve the honour as they have written a song that has been embraced by the nation. Itıs a beautiful example of the craft needed to raise a song above another itıs simple but hugely emotive,² says APRA NZ Director, Anthony Healey. ³We are extremely proud to showcase all the finalists and all the winners. New Zealand music and especially these songs remain vibrant and original² says Healey.

The complementary SOUNZ Contemporary Award which recognises creative excellence by a classical composer went to young Wellingtonian Chris Gendall for 'Wax Lyrical'. Ruia Aperahama won the APRA Maioha Award for contemporary Maori music with Rere Reta Rere Reta.

In a show that opened with a moving tribute to Mahinarangi Tocker, there was more audience-wide emotion with the hugely popular announcement of APRA's second induction to the NZ Music Hall Of Fame the Topp Twins. As APRA's Writer Director Arthur Baysting observes the Topps have achieved Kiwi icon status. ³With their unique brand of music laced with politics and humour, Lynda and Jools occupy a secure place in the NZ heartland.²

APRA NZ also presented a special award to New Zealand Musician magazine editor Richard Thorne recognising the magazine's 20 years of services (1988 - 2008) to New Zealand music.
