Wellington non-conformists Rhombus are dropping a debut vinyl EP in August 2004, featuring the souful reggae single Together and an India/Banghara meets Aotearoa hip-hop remix of Pushing Blocks.

The 12" vinyl is a strictly limited exclusive US pressing mastered by George Horn (Fantasy Studios,USA), who also mastered the still highly sought after 12" Midnight Marauders by Fat Freddys Drop (NZ) and Ubiquity Records (USA).

MC Imon Star aka Olmecha Supreme, Murk108, leads the way on Together, a reggae and soul inflected tune boosted by Lisa Tomlins, diva and integral new Rhombus member, and Deva Mahal, guest vocalist and sister of MC Imon Star. Lisa is a member of electronica act Ebb and has collaborated with the likes of The Three Divas, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Trinity Roots and 50HZ.

Pushing Blocks
(remix) originally appeared on the band’s 'Bass Player' album and for the remix MC Imon Star is joined by vocalist Raashi Malik. The long time Rhombus member, inspired by a six month trip to India, executes the hook ‘Karo’ in her indigenous tongue Hindi. ‘Karo’ means ‘to do it!

While the Rhombus debut album ‘Bass Player’ consisted almost entirely of firewire and studio/mpc sequenced based works beamed between Aotearoa and Japan, the debut 12" vinyl includes live instruments. MC Imon Star jumps on bass and guitars, homas Voyce on keys, Kuru ‘Kaboom’ Apirana, drummer for Olmecha Supreme, on drums and members of the NZSO feature on strings. Chief engineering and additional production is by Simon Rycroft.

The vinyl release comes as Rhombus step up the pace for their sophomore album release due spring 2004 and tentatively titled ‘Future Reference’. The album will be followed by a second 12" vinyl EP and one of the confirmed tracks is a remix of Tour of Outer Space by DJ Submariner who has remixed and played with the likes of Dimmer, Che Fu, Bic Runga, Salmonella Dub and is 1/3 of the infamous Turnaround monthly event in Auckland. The Tour of Outer Space music video, starring Raashi and directed by Wade Shotter, was runner up for ‘Best Video’ at the recent 2004 Kodak Music Clip Awards.

A vinyl release party is scheduled for Sunday 22 August at Bodega, Wellington, featuring exclusive short film outtakes from behind the scenes with Rhombus and other guests. There will also be special lineup of guests DJ’s, singers and musos.
