The finalists for the 2006 APRA Silver Scroll Award, the Maioha Award and the 2006 SOUNZ Contemporary Award have been announced.

The Silver Scroll finalists are:

Dann Hume, Jon Hume, Peter Hume (Evermore) - Running
James Milne (Lawrence Arabia and The Reduction Agents) - The Pool
Don McGlashan - Bathe in the River
Don McGlashan - Miracle Sun
Anika Moa - Stolen Hill

James Milne is a first time finalist up against last year's winners Evermore, and Don McGlashan - a previous winner in 1994 with Anchor Me. Anika Moa has never been a finalist for the Award either but has won the Most Performed Work in NZ award for YouthfuI.

Don McGlashan is the first finalist to have two songs nominated since Dave Dobbyn in 1995.

The Silver Scroll Award, New Zealand's most prestigious song-writing award, has been presented since 1965. The 2006 APRA Silver Scroll, the Maioha and the SOUNZ Awards plus two other awards will be presented at an exclusive invite only awards show on Wednesday September 20 at the Auckland Town Hall.

Commercial success is not a consideration for the Silver Scroll judging panel that assess both musical and lyrical content equally.

The three finalists for the 2006 APRA Maioha Award for best waiata have also been chosen.

The three finalist waiata are:

Matariki – Ngatai Huata

E HineRichard Randell (Bennett)

Taku KotiroMahinarangi Tocker and Rihitapuwae Tocker

Judges commented that the finalist songs featured compelling melodies and unique compositional aspects that set them apart.

The APRA Maioha award seeks to recognise excellence in contemporary Maori music and to acknowledge waiata in Te Reo Maori. It was first presented in 2003 and is jointly administered by APRA and the Maori Music Industry Coalition (MMIC).

The previous winners for this award are Ngahiwi Apanui, Harereuia Aperahama, and Whirimako Black & Antituatua Black.

The name Maioha embraces creativity and translates as "a spontaneous composition which reflects a very deep emotional understanding". Judges are asked to consider the creative content of the music and lyrics, along with the use of Te Reo Maori when selecting the finalists.

Three orchestral works, each featuring a soloist, have been chosen as finalists for the 2006 SOUNZ Contemporary Award.
They are Releasing the Angel  by Eve de Castro-Robinson for cello and orchestra, Tumbu by Dylan Lardelli for clarinet and orchestra and Symphony No. 2 for mezzo soprano and orchestra by Ross Harris.
The first two works were both commissioned by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra as part of an ongoing project to showcase their principal players as soloists.Releasing the Angel featured NZSO principal cellist David Chickering in its premiere while Tumbu featured NZSO principal clarinettist Patrick Barry. Ross Harris is Composer in Residence with the Auckland Philharmonia and his Symphony No. 2 was premiered by this orchestra in a performance which featured the outstanding young New Zealand mezzo Madeleine Pierard.
The SOUNZ Contemporary Award, consisting of a trophy sculpted by Auckland artist Sarah Smuts Kennedy and $3000, is the major annual prize celebrating creative excellence by a New Zealand composer. The SOUNZ Contemporary Award is a collaborative project between APRA, the Australasian Performing Right Association and SOUNZ, Centre for New Zealand Music. SOUNZ administers the award and convenes a jury of four music professionals to judge the entries.
A unique feature of the Awards night is the Silver Scroll finalists' songs and the winning SOUNZ and Maioha compositions being performed by their contemporaries, under the musical directorship of composers Victoria Kelly and Joost Langeveld. The other awards presented on the night are the the SOUNZ Contemporary Award, the Most Performed Work Overseas and the Most Performed Work in New Zealand.
