Fresh Talent: Blake
Author: Shaun Chait
Wellington punkers Blake formed a little under four years ago when drummer Dave Brown met vocalist/guitarist Craig Coburn while waiting for his friend's band to finish practising. They jammed to kill time, were overheard and asked if they wanted a support slot. Craig agreed even though they had no bassist or songs! They played their first show four weeks later with a full original set, and a short time after that friend Tim Vogetherr (bass player who also sings) joined the band.
Blake play high energy punk. "Originally we tried to be a hardcore band," they explain, "but we found it more fun to play punk."
First release, an EP called 'Holy Moly', was supposed to be a demo but ended up being sold around the country. They have also had tracks included on three NZ compilations and on an American alt/punk/metal compilation.
Blake have just released their debut album. Called 'Outta Control', it is distributed through Global Routes nationwide. 'Outta Control' was recorded between Matrix Digital in Wellington and Rockbottom Studios in Auckland, all under the watchful eye of soundman Spencer Fairhurst.
Blake ("we wanted a name that didn't mean anything") write about "everything from politics to beer, from girls to surfing." Songwriting is a joint effort, usually coming out of jam sessions. Their philosophy is to "try and have as much fun as we can. When it's not fun anymore we will stop."
And fun they have had, supporting friends Foamy Ed and Sommerset, as well as internationals The Vandals and The Ataris. Blake are currently touring the country in support of the release of 'Outta Control'. From there they will look to try their luck across the ditch in Oz.
