SFRQ regional results 2012 - Timaru

12 June 2012

Five piece band Bitter Class won the Timaru Smokefreerockquest regional final at the Theatre Royal on Friday night.

Bitter Class is made up of students from year 8 through to year 13 from four different schools, and was pulled together by the guitarist Ruby Fraser.

Fraser also won the Mainz Musicianship Award with the opportunity to be selected for the $4500 Music and Audio Institute of New Zealand Scholarship, and the Smokefree Award For Women’s Musicianship.

Second place went to The Electric Conception.

These top two bands will go on to compete for one of eight national finalist spots in this year’s Smokefreerockquest national final at Claudelands in Hamilton on 22 September.

The eight national finalists will be selected from a pool made up of first and second place-getters from each of the 24 regional finals, and bands from Rockshop Second Chance, an opportunity for established bands who feel they didn’t play at their best on the night.

Other regional awards made on Friday night:

Third place: Jaz Paterson from Craighead Diocesan School

APRA Lyric Award: Amii and Kat from Ashburton College for the song Nothing Matters

Lowdown Best Song: Burning Dawn from Geraldine High School

Skinny People’s Choice voted by text: Whitenight from Mount Hutt College
