Big Day Out Post Event Summary 2012

The Big Day Out landed in Auckland for the last time on Friday, January 20, with a crowd of just under 20,000 music fans. Following a joint briefing session held directly after the Auckland Big Day Out event, this information has been compiled in conjunction with representatives of the following organisations - 

St John Ambulance 
Auckland Central Police

. To the best of our collective knowledge this summary is an accurate and up to date representation of the day’s incidents.


St Johns reported a relatively trouble free day, treating a 348 punters for the usual variety of festival-related complaints of blisters, headaches and twisted ankles.  Three people were taken to hospital but these were not reported as serious injuries or medical complaints.

Auckland Central Police report there were no arrests.

Promoters said Big Day Out farewelled Auckland with a smaller but no less enthusiastic crowd than ever. 

Headliners Soundgarden rocked a large crowd, swelled by over two thousand people taking advantage of the promoters' early evening offer of a two hour window allowing anyone with a tshirt or ticket from Big Day Outs past to come join the party.

Earlier in the day Shihad's Jon Toogood, a Big Day Out fixture for the duration of the festival's time in Auckland joined Aussie rockers Living End for a rousing version of Nirvana's "Breed" and skater Tony Hawk and locals Six60 drew some of the biggest crowds of the day.

Noel Gallagher closed the event for the last time in Auckland with the Oasis classic "Don't Look Back In Anger" - a suitable singalong sentiment for thousands of Big Day Out fans from the festival's two decade long run.
