Big Day Out Q&A - The Adults

06 December 2011

The Big Day Out is a staple ingredient in the NZ music festival diet, boasting large international superstars and 'man-of-the-hour' local acts. Jon Toogood will grace the stage on January 20 with some familiar faces to make up The Adults. We talked to the man himself to gain insight on the festival and what to expect on the day.

This will be your first BDO under The Adults moniker. How will you refrain from breaking into any of Shihad’s meanest hits?

Easy. I’ll be onstage with Shayne Carter and Julia Deans who don’t know any Shihad songs so it won’t be an option.

Who will The Adults consist of on the day?
Shayne Carter, Julia Deans and myself.

Are there any special tricks we can expect?
I explode in the first song.

Describe the gear set-up you’ll be using?
Apple Macbook Pro running Ableton Live software, Digi002 Rack, Fender Blues Junior III amp, Fender Telecaster, Fender American Standard P Bass, Gibson SG, Squier Jazz Bass, Novation Remote 49 Midi Controller, Hot Cake, Red Witch Pentavocal Tremelo, Line 6 Pod, Cry Baby Wah Pedal, Morely Wah Pedal, Boss TU3 Tuner, Radial DIs.

What’s your all-time favourite Big Day Out moment?
Meeting Joe Strummer.

Advice for a BDO virgin?
Make a plan beforehand.

Do you have any pre-performance warm up routines or rituals?
I usually do a poo and spend time annoying the other two.

Do you have any special rider requirements?
No.

Out of all of the other acts announced, who would you want to be invited onstage by?
The Living End because they know how to play AC/DC good.

Is The Adults an ongoing project or was this just a one-off?
I’d do The Adults thing again in a heartbeat.

Who would you like to collaborate with in the future?
Kora, Cairo Knife Fight, Beastwars, F In Math, Opossum, Unknown Mortal Orchestra plus any/all the people who played on the first album
