Seven crimes with a smaller fine than music piracy

21 January 2010

Thinking of illegally downloading some music? Don’t. Yes, it’s not the worst crime you could imagine but it certainly comes with a hefty fine. Jammie Thomas, a single mother of four from Minnesota downloaded 24 songs from Kazaa.com in 2007 and walked away with a fine of almost US$2 million for her crimes. Website Gapers Block has posted an amusing and almost scary blog with seven crimes that will get you a smaller fine than music piracy.

1. Child abduction: US$25,000.

2. Stealing the actual CD: US$2,500

3. Burglary: US$375,000

4. Arson: US$375,000

5. Stalking: US$175,000

6. Starting a dog fighting ring: US$50,000

7. Second-Degree Murder: US$25,000 and 15 years in jail.

Note: Please do not commit any of the crimes listed. NZM holds no responsibility for your actions.
