Shimm: Off the Top of My Head
By Alistair Wickens
I’m actually not a big fan of pop, alt-pop, pop-rock or anything in that vein but this album is a pleasant surprise. The songs are catchy and original and there is nothing here that sounds out of place. It’s easy in pop to fall into cliches and stick to formulaic writing, but Shimm seem to
have avoided that trap. A three piece when the album was recorded, the Auckland band has now added a keyboardist to the line up; a move that should add another dimension to their relaxed sound. Whilst I wouldn’t recommend
putting this album on to hype yourself up before going out, it makes a good soundtrack to a lazy Sunday afternoon. At only seven songs long though you might want to hit the repeat button to get your money’s worth.
