Pacific Curls: Mothersline
By Truda Chadwick
Coming on the heels of 'Reeling In the Pacific' from Planet Woman it was inevitable that the considerable talents of Mahina Kaui, Kim Halliday and Ora Barlow would be pooled to create this taonga. The creative purity of the instrumentation and its texture, this weave of delicate music and vocalese just emotes the spirit of all the elemental things that make our country so special. Halliday's musicianship is ever on the rise - her guitar and ukulele playing shines here, and the empathy between these three women has taken them to such a beautiful place on this recording. From the haunting opening chant Hineiwhakaataia to the stunning closing Farewell, Pacific Curls enchant with a sort of unplugged sound - no bass or drums, just the subtle use of taonga puoro (Maori flutes), djembe, ukulele, hue (clay gourds), guitars and reeds and those divine vocals. Soulful and warm, and original, with contributions from writers Wiremu Nia Nia (Totara Tree) and Rura Karaitiana (Blue Smoke), 'Mothersline' is a must-buy for this summer.
