The Datsuns: Outta Sight/Outta Mind
By Shaun Chait
One of the stand outs when garage rock swept the world a few years ago, The Datsuns have, in their absence, let other bands catch up, and let upstarts like The Darkness redefine the boundaries. This album has to avoid two bullets - second album syndrome, and the swamping of their genre by like-minded acts. Their response has been to climb back into the driver's seat, put the foot on the accelerator, and speed round the same track once more for the road. 'Outta Sight/Outta Mind' uses the same environmentally damaging gas - garage rock'n'roll, heavy rock, glam, punk, metal et al. Big riffs, loud guitars, and a hard hitting rhythm section are the order of the day. Cherry Lane is a classic rock song, What I've Lost provides a solid example of The Datsuns' taste for melody, blues rocker I Got No Words has some great guitar flourishes and builds wonderfully, and Lucille sounds like the stuff the album's producer John Paul Jones used to make with his old band. The cover art sees the band almost paying further homage than they have with their music, imitating a certain Led Zep sleeve. A better record than many quick fix overseas reviewers would have you believe.
