One Million Dollars: Energy State
By Emma Philpott
A strong debut from this Auckland soul-jazz group. Dancier songs from their live set, like The Original and Who You Are are just as upbeat on the record, and they are well balanced with the more laid back Get Off and On This Day. Duet High Places is another high point - guest vocalist Rebekah Peterson just touching Setford's vocals enough to move the song to another level. One Million Dollars have been compared to Jamiraquoi, but its easy to shake off that comparison after a few listens. The whole album has a deep bass fatness thanks to mixing and mastering by Auckland's Ekadek, with sprinklings of keyboard by up-and-comer Steph Brown. And after adding tracks Quando Voce Chegar and Musica Na Cabeca, with vocals sung in Portuguese by import Robson Santos, it's hard to compare One Million Dollars to anyone - best just to stick your feet up and listen. Released on Sugarlicks Recordings through BMG.
