PARACHUTE BAND: Matins : Vespers
By Amanda Mills
Double album ‘Matins : Vespers’ is the fourth album from the second generation of Parachute Band and takes the Christian worship band on a different route, creating music with more of a concept which relates to the traditions of morning songs (‘Matins’), and evening prayers (‘Vespers’). The first disc features upbeat rock/pop songs with vocals that soar to the heavens, fitting for the subject matter. The radio-friendly, almost anthemic, nature of the music – especially on single Keep the Fire Burning with its danceable beats and melodic hook – is smart, and again puts a commercial mark on their songs of worship. The ‘Vespers’ disc is another departure for the band – seven tracks of atmospheric music that is reflective of the quiet state of evening prayer. Based around keyboards, piano, and percussion, this music is beautiful (especially the piano piece Consecrate), presenting what the band term “a canvas for devotion”.
