Matty Warmington: Flow

By Tony Parker
Matty Warmington is a singer and songwriter from Wellington who possesses a powerful falsetto and a writing style that, no matter how you look at it, invites comparisons with the late Jeff Buckley. Emotive and at times raw, the music is driven by the same rhythmic sensibilities, guitar soundscapes and melodic twists that characterised Buckley’s, and possibly any number of other modern rock bands’ work (see Radiohead, Pearl Jam, Coldplay). Warmington also manages to invest his songs with a dynamic awareness that plays on the strengths of the supporting musicians, all of whom are involved in one way or another in the Wellington music scene. Helping bring about this sound is guitarist/producer Joe Callwood and together the pair have created an almost orchestral backdrop that seems entirely appropriate for Warmington’s earnest yet heartfelt songs. Out through Loop.
