Pine: Long Player

By Mark Woodley
The debut full-length album from this Christchurch trio has a distinct summery feel to it. Maybe it's just me feeling the winter blues, but this is a nice change. Short infectious songs with warm simple flowing melodies and light unaffected vocals. Makes me want to go sit on a beach and forget all my worries and the things I should do and make shapes from the clouds or something. I normally can't stand brit-pop-influenced kind of stuff, too often mawkish and lightweight and plain annoying. But whether it's due to my mood, or my completely objective reviewing, Pine manages to break down the cynicism and create a genuinely enjoyable listen. There have been single releases from this album, including Make Way for the King and Beaten Again, but my pick of the bunch is Lazy Tracey, buried just over halfway through. "I won't let you down/ The sun will see you frown." Good stuff.
