Various: Radio Active - 25: The Silver Selections

By Mark Woodley
This is excellent stuff. A two-disc selection from Wellington's Radio Active 89FM to mark the station's 25th birthday. A variety of local Wellington acts plus a smattering of other NZ underground artists Radio Active has supported and documented in recent times. Disc one is a beat-based affair, with the nice playful opener Let'n Off Shots from Murk 108; other highlights include Agent Alvin's down-n-dirty Flap-Jack Heaven, the sublime remix of Sheelaroc's If I Gave You Da Mic, and Rhombus' Distance featuring the ethereal vocals of Lotus. Disc two contains a few more rocking flavours. The Clean hit it off with the lovely Wipe Me, I'm Lucky, and the Letterbox Lambs play straight-ahead rockers with the power pop of Engine Brakes. Minuit and The Phoenix Foundation also contribute beautiful tracks. The disc rounds off with the roots and dub crews, the likes of Trinity Roots, The Black Seeds, Zuvuya and Cornerstone Roots, remixed and live. This is a neat and valuable document, a tribute not only to Wellington and NZ's underground music scene, but also to Radio Active who play and support them. Top marks.
