Brendyn Montgomery & Mike Considine: Mountain Air
By Mike Moroney
Definitely an album for the hardcore traditionalists; jigs and reels from the fine black flute and whistles of Brendyn Montgomery with the Mike Considine's superb Irish bouzouki accompaniment. Brendyn is currently a student at the Irish World Music Centre in Limerick. The credit notes read like a who's who of the NZ Celtic music scene but for the most part the arrangements are simple, single melody and rhythm instruments with the occasional tasteful addition of bodhran. It's nice to hear an album of traditional music without the clutter of electronica and there's still plenty to take in. A lovely production, from the beautifully executed playing to the flawless recording, 'Mountain Air' will be a benchmark for traditional music in NZ for some time to come.
