RAP AUTHORITAR : Rap Authoritar (EP)

By Kate Foster
What a polarizing little promo EP this gem is. Rap Authoritar (Joe Buchanan) seems to be an international man of mystery, a law learning, trained therapeutic massage-giving, yoga-practising, rhyme-spitting younger brother of Eric Ultimate (of the hip hop unit Coco Solid). No doubt he has a solid flow but some tracks have such an air of nonchalant humour about them it was hard to know whether I should be taking it seriously or sniggering along with the impressive figure Rap Authoritar cuts. For the listeners’ pleasure, recent Radio Active favourite Bok Choy appears but for the real deal head straight to Paracetomol featuring Eric Ultimate and Minestrone. Huge beats and verses flex and boil as the MCs vie for the spot of top dog on the track. Rolls Royce Rhythm is a superb slice of UK grime-styled hip hop in the vein of Dizzee Rascal, Wiley or even Roots Manuva. There are spots of dark minimalism like Rap Hit or Psycho that grow after repeated listen,s but Rap Authoritar’s spark hits the mark best on the vibey party or bravado influenced tracks. An excellent taster.
