CYBIONT : A Trilogy of Random Thoughts & Considerations

By Stephanie Gray
For the exercise of applying a genre to this debut album by bedroom producer Cybiont, let’s call this ‘eco-electro’. It’s not that the 19 tracks are particularly beat-laden – Cybiont’s voice sets more of a rhythm than anything – but that the messages woven throughout all his electronic compositions are as clear as a Fiordland stream. Reverent references to planet Earth, conversations with birds, pleas to sing for the sake of it, alien life and musings about rich people reveal a conviction for environmental activism. Cybiont acknowledges that his album is a “… rather personal venture” that seeks to “… leave its ego-centric existence by connecting its emotions to the collective soul.” The man himself remains elusive and he may be French by the sound of the songs sung/spoken with a firm theatrical quality. All in all, the spiritual intentions of this album are clear, and the drum a worthy one to beat.
