Biff Merchants : Harold

By Alistar Wickens
The South Island’s Biff Merchants continue a strong tradition of musical innovation stemming from the far South. Whilst their music references a number of early prog-rock luminaries, with the band themselves acknowledging the influence of King Crimson and Can, there are several moments that hark back to the “Dunedin sound” of the eighties.
‘Harold’ is their first full length release and it’s polished quality shows that the band has spent the year prior refining their sound and musical direction. It’s a finely crafted collection of 10 songs, with each track building a layered aural soundscape, staying true to their progressive rock leanings. Like most prog-rock groups, live performance is probably the Biff Merchants main platform for their music and it’s no easy feat transferring and transcribing what occurs on the stage to the studio and capturing it during recording, but this album shows that the band can do it and do it well.
All up a finely crafted and well presented album, right down to the packaging, and a recording that shows that the Southern sound is still influential in producing strong bands.
