DAVID KILGOUR & SAM HUNT: Falling Debris

Just imagine the larks had by distinct talents David Kilgour and Sam Hunt, coming together to write this album. I can picture them – one draped around a guitar while the other sends a lanky leg swinging with the beat. Recorded mostly in 2008, the songs on ‘Falling Debris’ fold Hunt’s lyrics into spacious compositions by Kilgour and his band the Heavy 8s. Given lyrics on a silver platter – one that’s a little dented, tarnished, nonetheless – Kilgour excels. In his own words; “The making of the LP really has been an organic process… I also think of the word serendipity: finding pleasing things in unexpected places.” Despite intentions to make a spoken word album, Kilgour found his fire in Hunt’s words and in the space of four months, wrote 20 songs to a mix of old and new poetry sent by Hunt for the purpose. By the time the two reunited at the Otago Arts Festival both agreed the album should feature songs only. One favourite is First One Hit, enriched with organ and the story of feminine force to be reckoned with. Here, Kilgour’s gentle vocal delivery almost belies the intensity of the picture Hunt paints. River Plateau, with its pleasant acoustic drive and open-sky sound, is similarly inspired.
