Friend: Inaccuracies & Omissions

By Shaun Chait
People can do incredible things with sound – see Bjork or Jordan Reyne. 'Friend' is Chris Knox's one man experiment with 8- and 2- track tape loops, Pro Tools, and a Creative NZ grant. Anyone knowledgeable about Chris's work can throw those familiarities out the window, as Knox takes his experiments in sound manipulation and violation to the extreme. This sounds like the sort of stuff I used to study at Uni and unless you are into it on an intellectual level, most of it is rather unlistenable. The time consuming nature of collecting and working the sounds Knox captures here made this a real labour of love and his notes make interesting reading. From his Easy Pieces fun with piano to the industrial sounding Scrape and including the insects on speed Insecticider, these are novel ideas worked through to conclusion. It's rhythmic noise without being noisy, but to listen to the whole thing through you need a mind open enough to drive a truck through.
