CASSETTE: The Jingle King

It’s the same but somewhat different on this second album from Cassette. While ‘Cut For Summer’ was indeed a sunshine-filled romance, ‘The Jingle King’ feels more like a late night drinking companion for spirited conversation. Sentimental, throwback, psychedelic country rock, where everything is built around the melody. There’s a charming easiness and familiarity to the Cassette take on melody, fuelled as it is by ’70s greats. Cassette founders Tom Watson and Craig Terris have two of my favourite voices, and the band is rounded out this time round by the likes of Luke Buda (Phoenix Foundation) and Andrew Bain (Fur Patrol). Lee Prebble is behind the knobs. Three Four is a Neil Young-sounding epic ’70s folk rock number. Shadow with its Pacific flavoured strum sounds like something good friends The Phoenix Foundation would record. Say Goodbye is a country nodder with an enduring chorus, and Day Goes By (a highlight from their recent ‘Cancer’ EP) is classic Cassette sing along pop. Elsewhere there’s prog rockers, indie tunes, and slow building epics (Slow Down). Harmonies everywhere, and Watson’s guitar always has something to say. • Related Information
