LA Mitchell: Live At The Matterhorn

By Rachel Fallon
After her releasing her debut album ('Debut') in 2007, Christchurch-based jazz, soul singer, songwriter Lauren Mitchell aka LA Mitchell has grabbed the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of the now very successful Fat Freddys Drop, with a live recording from Wellington's Matterhorn Bar. After three years of music study then recording and performing with the likes of Dave Dobbyn, Flip Grater and Solaa, she has combined a mix of her own originals with three covers that creates the feel of the old school jazz greats mixed with contemporary soul. It is a very pleasant chill out album that successfully lulled my daughter to sleep, undone a little by the rough editing between some tracks. She has a beautifully rich, passionate voice and is well backed by the talented Nativa band with mixing and mastering by Mike Gibson at Trident Studios. The album is released on Mitchell's own independent label Honesty Box Records and distributed by Rhythmethod.
