Bryce: A Perfect Day For Travel

By Tony Parker
Taranaki-based Bryce Wastney is another of those skilled singer/songwriters that fall easily into the contemporary adult pop-rock bag. Think fledgling Luke Thompson and the brothers Reid - or in a female form Brooke Fraser. It’s a formula we know well now with its tasteful mix of acoustic and electric guitars, mid tempo ballads, heartfelt vocals and personal, slightly ambiguous lyrics drawn from experience, that could be addressing a lover or maybe some higher power. Wastney ticks all these boxes and to his credit he does it well with help from Australian guitarist/producer Dale Willis. There’s an attention to musical detail and the craft of songwriting that might reflects his time as a boat builder. The result is a well polished if somewhat samey set of songs, ultimately there’s nothing here that hasn’t been done before.
