Malevolence: Eyes To See - Ears To Hear - Wrists To Slit
By David Harris
: If you need more than pure ass kicking metal to get your mosh on then you find out all you really need to know from this album's title. Six tracks of pure brutalness with pointed, and sometimes political, piercing lyrics. Horns high to Malevolence for keeping their sound as good as ever. With each song paced at a double-kick the combined tracks make for 13 minutes of mercury smooth darkness. The guttural Passing Monster, at just 15 seconds, contributes to the short though sweet time frame. With genuine NZ equilibrium and old-fashioned DIY enthusiasm the band steps up with this crystal clear, well-mixed self-recorded album. Each beat is heard, each rift vibrates, you can almost hear fingers bleeding, with vox that tilt from words wrenched from a raw throat to a guttural syrupy growl - accentuating the lyrics at specifically clarifying moments. Hats off to Dero (gats and vox), Nich (gats), Julz (bass) and Ben on drums, may there be much more Malevolence to come.
