Sol Harris: Lazy Days
By Amanda Mills
UK-born Sol Harris' debut album combines acoustic pop/folk with an adult contemporary style. Harris has been a semi-pro musician for over 20 years, performing in folk festivals from Vancouver to Waiheke Island, showcasing his original material and covers. 'Lazy Days' was recorded, mixed and produced at three different locations - Sun Studios (Fiji), Phil's Studio (Helensville) and Audio Arts (Waiheke Island), with mastering by Simon Lynch at Stebbings. While Harris is the sole performer on five of the songs, other musicians include saxophonist Mark Denninson, guitarists Brodie White of The Have and Ross Turner from My Sweet Fear. Keyboards were provided by Aomahana (producer on the Waiheke Island songs) on the title track and Ten Thousand Miles. The music can be similar in places, but this doesn't deter the listening experience, as this is an album of mellow, laid back songs, with flowing melodies that utilise Harris' 4-octave, crystal clear voice. The lyrics are inspired by love, music and nature, with references throughout to beaches, wind and landscapes, while Harris' influences of James Taylor, Paul Simon and Sting (among others) are present in his lyrics as well as delivery. 'Lazy Days' is an album for just that occasion.
