Various: All Blacks The Music
By Shaun Chait
Gone are the days when a rugby loving musician was an oxymoron. Loop have recognized the marketing and branding power of the All Blacks, got the official NZRU stamp of approval, and brought in some players to pick out tracks that help make them tick. This compilation is no more than an exercise in breaking the European market, to the point where 'All Blacks Marketing The Music' would be more apt. As such, for NZ audiences it holds little fresh appeal except for the haka and a new Che Fu song. With the of the odd lamentable exception it's hits (but not best tracks) from the likes of Bic, Scribe, Pluto, The Feelers and Anika, the track listing oddly skewed towards after-match chill rather than pre-game hype and pump up. Nesian Mystik's For The People is the perfect after game celebration. Mostly roots, reggae, easy listening and R&B fare, there is a surprising lack of rock tracks given rugby's physical characteristics.
