Urbantramper: Tokon & The Colours

By Steph Gray
Shrugging off his Urbantramper moniker after six years, Lake has left a solid fan-base (and Aotearoa) with this dreamy final offering. It follows two EPs, two albums and a best-of compilation released through A Low Hum. It again features the understated talent of the 10,000 Times Glorious band - Eli Chisholm, Joe Beaglehole and Glen Johnson - and the input of friends with trumpets and sweet voices. The 10 quietly acoustic songs were recorded and produced at "sifty (sic) flats in Wellington and Whangamata", hence the song Shitty Flat which pokes gentle fun at humble crumbling homes in the same way How Do You Have Your Tea? taps into relationships and kitchen table chats. With thunder rolls, harmonica and subtle harmonies, The Ballad of Mr Rochester references the classic Brontë novel. Chirpy glockenspiel and handclaps ease the ache of unrequited love as told in Data Entry Daydream and the electronic composition enhances the dark edge of Some Things Are Bad. 'Like it, buy it, share it, burn it' as Lake urges, 'Tokon & The Colours' is from Maiden Records, distributed by Elite.
