Various: Eagle vs Shark (Soundtrack)

By Tom Anderson
'Eagle vs Shark' is a kooky little number. That's not to say I don't take it seriously, I do. If there ever was music made to fit this movie then this collection is right on the mark. The Phoenix Foundation provide the basis for the album with 11 of the 26 tracks from the Wellington six-piece (and Luke Buda a few more on his own). I find this album, as is often not the case with soundtracks, to be unpretentious music, the kid sitting in the sandpit making his own bizarre sandcastle, not caring what others think. The vocal clips are a break up that I find really works, a little light refreshment amongst the interesting, well-produced and at times heavenly music. Some songs I did find myself flicking past, the bizarre cleverness was not quite there. Despite the odd weakness and impurity, this album, if nothing else, tells the tale perfectly. It is a journey that sweeps and soars, dips and dives to create a beautiful story on its own. A basket laden with apples and tangerines - all very much from the same tree.
