Craig Smith: Don't Shake My Tree

By Shaun Chait
This outing from South Islander Craig Smith follows 2005's '12 Originals', and was recorded at Voodoo Music Studio with Ryan Neville handling mixing and mastering. The rather dark artwork doesn't tell the story, Smith's music is in the easy listening folk pop vein. While the album has its moments (sombre closing track Miss You Dearly and the island vibe of Come With Me, in addition to some enjoyable slide guitar), by and large the songs are uninspiring and forgettable. Listening as I write, I've already forgotten what the last song sounded like (this despite multiple airings). Smith has a pleasant voice and seems keen to hone his craft. Maybe he should concentrate less on trying different styles and instead master the one he's most comfortable with.
