The Lure of Shoes: Perfect Fit

By Tony Parker
The Lure of Shoes is a band that includes former Able Tasmans' drummer Craig Mason, ex Netherworld Dancing Toy Nick Sampson and most tellingly, two artist/musicians in James Moore and Paulus McKinnon. Together their busy and often complex songs take on an art rock approach with nods towards psychedelica, indie rock and Flying Nun. Recorded mostly live by another Nun alumnus, Tex Houston, the music takes on an almost Pavement-like feel with melodic twists and turns and guitars that alternate between fuzzed out abandon and more controlled jangle. It's a successful mix up to point; especially on the opener Crushed with its melodic bass lines and hooky chorus and the bouncy RSJ which appears towards the end, but elsewhere leave's a feeling that the songs both musically and lyrically would have benefited from further editing, that most are still works in progress.
