Lifelike: Degrees K
By Reuben Keeling
The one thing that singles Degrees K out from the rock crowd is the depth of their music. If it weren't for that depth, it would be easy to write 'Lifelike' off as just another modern-rock release. Their sound is very Manic Street Preachers, except there's an edge that isn't so easily dismissed. The album is full of thoughtful lyrics and sharp guitars, but also a musical confidence that's rare for such a young band on their debut album. Since their conception three years ago Degrees K have successfully evolved their energetic live sound, and with the recent addition of a second guitarist and vocalist Ben Edwards, the band seems to have found a nice balance. Production from Rob Mayes at Christchurch's Avalanche Studios has harnessed that energy well, resulting in a very solid album. Out on Failsafe Records.
