The Sneaks:: Self-titled

By Steph Gray
Given the choice of three genres when filling out their MySpace account, the Sneaks opted for pop/pop/pop - bubble-wrapping a sticky mix of cool pop, lolly-pop and what they call throwaway pop. Yappy, clappy, and appealingly breathless, The Sneaks' debut album features 14 brisk little numbers. They've sullied good clean fun with smears of sex and cigarettes, and (clever lads) juxtapose the poppy oohs and aaahs with computer weirdness courtesy of the Function Generator. Listed as a 'fourth band member', the Generator is undoubtedly inorganic and I like it. James Dansey, Martin Keane and Daniel Ward self-produced this album in a home studio, had it mastered at Kog Studios and released it in June through their Kingsland Racquets Society label. They toured the album and then left for London on a one-way ticket. Standout tracks include Cindy's a Zombie Now, and Passing Notes - danceable and desperate. At one and a half minutes long, Bus Bitch is a mean theme for the commuters with lots of input from the Function Generator. I'm guessing No Sex! with its drug references and singalong chorus (no sex, no sex, no sex) makes it to the set-list of most gigs.
