Ragamuffin Children : Werecat Lullabies
By Amanda Mills
Of the many superlatives that might describe Ragamuffin Children's debut album, I'll choose exquisite. Christchurch duo Anita Clark (vocalist/instrumentalist) and Brooke Singer (songwriter/keyboardist) create stylish, atmospheric songs and varied moods, accentuated by non-traditional instrumentation of cello, clarinet and glockenspiel. The album arose from Singer winning LOOP Recordings' Rise and Shine songwriting competition which led to recording of single More of Me. Once completed, work began on the album which was produced by Ragamuffin Children, engineered by Andrew Snook and Oscar Allison, and mixed by Snook, Allison and Singer. Featured musicians include Jess Chambers (bvs), Benjamin James (clarinet), and Rachael Linton (cello). Songs range from the stunning, acapella Ancestors, where Clark's voice is effectively echoed, to the jaunty Sea Shanty to Bonus Track 2, featuring Minstrel, the singing dog. Released by Jody Lloyd's She'll Be Right Records, this remarkable album must be heard. Clark possesses a wonderful, expressive voice, and Singer is a talented keyboardist, not to mention one of the best of our young songwriters.
