TAMA WAIPARA: Leaving Paradise
By Tim Page
Tama Waipara has an impressive musical CV. A graduate of Manhattan School of Music, and signed to indie label Obliqsound, this emerging singer songwriter has been keeping busy, releasing a debut album 'Triumph of Time', and performing with some notable musicians - Kiwis and New Yorkers, off shore and at home. One of his notable collaborators is Nathan Haines, who also contributes his exquisite sax to Morning Sun, the opening track to this Creative NZ-funded six track recording, released exclusively for the NZ market. Featuring on Take a Walk is new American discovery Emily King, who is creating a buzz in the US music industry having opened for the likes of Gnarls Barkley, India Arie, and Erykah Badu. Recorded here and in New York, the style is smooth soul, but with a distinctive Pacific flavour. The songwriting and arrangements are sophisticated, yet accessible, mellow yet not soporific. This is not music to get you on your feet, more a weekend kick back and relax sort of sound.
