Second Theory: Time Fails Us All
By David Harris
The title speaks of failure but this album definitely delivers. This is a band with high explosive shows and these seven tracks are rammed full of metal hardcore angst, vocalised by Regan Hughes. Standing out in sharp relief are some great moments of driving guitar rifts by Andrew Shaw and Kris Johansen, accompanied by Nick Pearson pounding the drums like a gorilla on speed, then slipping seamlessly between harmonic riffs and almost sweet vocals and back to cut throat beats and screaming vocals. Craig Taylor's bass weaves between it all like the spine of a shark. My favorite track is Waking For The First Time with guest vocalist Leon Ahmad-Hall of Cold By Winter. On All We Have each instrument supports the others in a flawless beginning. Although some lyrics are lost in the rawness of the vocals, there are almost poignant moments where they couldn't be clearer and the ending wraps both music and lyrics together in a tight, raw twist. Much respect for bands who get on and do their own CDs, this is yet another great Kiwi band and a definite addition to my collection.
