The Locos: Tangerine
By Simon Sweetman
I'm not really sure how seriously I should take this album - at times it seems like it's a joke, but then, there is an earnest charm that suggests this busking approach to be 100% sincere. Santiago Ribagliati (guitars, backing vocals) and Tim Mellalieu (vocals) have put this strange blend of acoustic blues and folk with sunny pop melodies out. There is a random Beatles' cover and an even more random take on INXS' New Sensation. It's kind'a neat and cute at times, but also occasionally makes you cringe; Belle & Sebastian, Kings Of Convenience or Turin Brakes these guys are most certainly not! But if you like a bit of rough'n'ready, tearing at the seams acoustic pop then you might like to try this. There are moments (the INXS cover is so straight that it's warped - in a David Lynch kind of way) that I actually find cool, but I somehow can't help wondering when the punch line is coming.
