BOSS CHRIST: Born of Wolf
By Steph Gray
Before the release of this debut album, Boss Christ toured his remedial blend of whiskey-blues and countryfried lickin' (guitar licks that is) with fellow one-man acts The Mysterious TapeMan and Bad Evil. Since then the big-hearted Wolfman has played prolifically - for the love of love in Patea, on Wellington cliff-tops, and on the Cook Strait ferry among more conventional venues. Recorded with Keepin' it Reel, and released through Stink Magnetic, this 12-song album features the crowd-pleasing Party at Boss Christ's House, and the controversial Bruce Springsteen Sux with the unforgettable assertation, "Why be born in the USA when you can be born in Masterton?" Then there's the tenderest of blues coaxed from a slide guitar played with a D-battery to a backing track of upright bass and drums. Boss has brought some friends in to lay down harmonica and percussive tracks, and he's nice enough to thank Hank Williams in the 'awesomeness acknowledged' inside-cover section along with the venues, family and friends that keep the Wolfman howlin'. While the production does do them justice, gems like Matahiwi Stampede and Lolita are best heard live. If you get the chance to see our Boss, take it. www.myspace.com/bosscrist
