Unity Pacific: Into The Dread
By Shaun Chait
'Into The Dread' is an exclamation of faith for band leader Tigi Ness, his Rastafarian beliefs explored lyrically and through Unity Pacific's roots reggae music. Recorded over just four nights at York Street, it shows the worth of a band that is connected to each other, with some of the tracks apparently coming out on the spot. There's some very good reggae on here. Opener From Street To Sky is compelling, as is King Of Justice. Although I prefer the darker tracks like Seven Bells or dub closer Into The Dread, the summery Unity is proof the band can go both ways. In a live environment I've no doubt Unity Pacific have the groove, but as an album this gets a bit longwinded, and would be more recommendable if the nine tracks were trimmed down from their 73 minute playing time. Engineered and mixed by Nic Manders at York Street, with the mastering done at Masterdisk in New York.
