Kill The Fake Patient: Inside the Unattainable

By David Harris
The vocals slide from flat to sharp, fading from strength to whisper echoing the music as it dips, swerves and sometimes screeches around corners. I agree with the band's local Dunedinmusic.com that sums up their differing dissonant chords as the element that makes them stand out. Described as alt/punk I'm not sure I would stop there, they encompass that vague genre and a whole lot more. The vocals tend to a high pitch and the invariable lilt that wavers downwards on some of the lyrics does tend to the dreary, a trait common among Dunedin bands. The live recording of the album itself is fine, levels are even and the sound is clear with each instrument seeming to slide into the other smoothly. I find myself playing it over and over, which is always a good sign. The stand out of the eight tracks for me is Samantha, which is the longest and is also on their MySpace page. This tasting of their sporadic style music gives me the impression that Inside The Unattainable would be great to see playing live.
