Nuclear Free Nation: Various
By Alison Millar
Released in conjunction with the Peace Foundation, Liaison Music and Kog Studios, Handmade Record's 'Nuclear Free Nation' compilation celebrates 20 years of NZ's nuclear free status, utilising music, art, images and even an audio-visual diary to make its political statement. The graphics in the album artwork are strong and evocative, each historic photo will resonate with most Kiwis better than a Tui billboard. Apparently today's nuclear weapons could pack the punch of 2000 World War IIs - a fact that makes more impact when demonstrated graphically, as is done in this album's inlay. Little dots have never scared me more. So call me tactile, but this beautifully packaged album really does make a most aesthetic contribution to the CD shelf. A vast array of our music qualifies for an album of this theme; executive producers Hannah Cornwell, Huia Hamon, Chris Chetland and team must have had a difficult time deciding what to leave off. They sought tracks which fit the kaupapa of love, sustainability and peace, and the resulting compilation is representative of our nation's talent from the 80's through to today. The final selection features Herbs, Trinity Roots, Shapeshifter *******and more, not forgetting the DVD which combines the likes of Adi Dick, Jakob and Kora with photos and interviews documenting our country's nuclear free journey.
