Brother J: Be Bop A Nui
By Liz Barry
Brother J is Jason Leslie Hall from Hokianga, a young man with a love of music stemming from late night whanau sing-alongs. Soon he was rockin' the mic with Auckland stylee crewers, including Slowdeck, Manuel and DLT, even hanging out with Crowded House at Greenstone Studios in Karekare. But it was at Wellington's Cuba Street Carnival, jamming with the mighty Roots Foundation that J met DJ Mu (Fat Freddys') and a love of bass, reggae and songwriting led the two to start work on J's album. The resulting 'Be Bob a Nui' is a pop soul shakedown with conscious lyrics, fat beats and fat bass - an album of sweet soul for the urban generation with nu-skool dub niceties. The album also features the talents of Levani Voasi, Tehimana and Toby Laing, Maya, Sheeba, MC J-Love, Nat Rose and Mu at the controls. Brother J provides the kind of sounds just right for cruisin' in the sun this summer. Out now through Sugarlicks Recordings Aotearoa.
