THE MOCKERS: Woke Up Today

By Stu Edwards
As icons of our '80s pop The Mockers produced some of the most memorable Kiwi songs and justifiably hold their own place in our music history. Besides the obvious crowd favourites One Black Friday and chart smash Forever Tuesday Morning‚ this new best of compilation is full of gems. While heavily leaning towards Brit pop‚ the Mockers successfully refined their style through their career and achieved a unique and instantly recognisable sound, thanks in a large measure to the poetic and performance abilities of vocalist (avid sailor and since published author) Andrew Fagan. Sleeping Through My Storm highlights their inherent pop sensibility while the hard rocking Murder in Manners St breaks the mood. Scattered amongst the predictably pop material are undeniable epic melodies. 'Woke Up Today' expands upon previous compilation 'The First Five Years'‚ and includes all the essentials. For anyone not already familiar with the brilliance of The Mockers here is a perfect introduction.
